About Bobbi Jo

A Little About Me
I am the founder of Discovery Psychological Services in Calgary, Alberta, and a Registered Psychologist with more than 25 years of experience supporting children, teens, adults, and families. Over the years, I have worked in schools, community agencies, and private practice, offering therapy, consultation, and psychoeducational assessments.
My path started in the classroom. I taught students with diverse needs, and I knew quickly that I wanted to become a psychologist so I could keep doing the parts of the work I love most: identifying strengths and needs, solving problems together, and helping families understand their child and advocate for what they need. I have been a teacher of diverse learners, a parent of a diverse learner, and a psychologist, and I find it helps parents to hear that I have seen it from all of those sides.
I am very relationship focused. Good rapport, a bit of humour, and a space where you feel warmth, care, and support matter just as much to me as any strategy. I draw on mindfulness, CBT, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and I offer walk and talk sessions for kids and teens who open up more easily when they are on the move. One thing I wish more parents knew before their first appointment: you have more influence on your child’s progress than any therapist ever will, and my job is to help you use it well.
When I do an assessment, I write the report so it is useful, not just a list of results. It explains what is happening, why, and how to use that understanding every day at home and at school. I am registered in both Alberta and British Columbia, and I travel to Cranbrook as needed so families in the East Kootenay area can complete assessments with me too.
I grew up on a farm in rural Alberta, started my teaching career in Saskatchewan, and moved to Calgary in 1994, where I have lived and worked ever since. Outside of work, you will most often find me outdoors with my dog, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, or planning my next adventure. I have a lifelong love of animals, and I secretly hope to have a small hobby farm of miniature animals one day, because everything is cuter in miniature. I also love learning, solving problems, and taking on projects, whether that means following the latest developments in psychology or helping a family work through a complex situation, and those same interests are what keep this work rewarding after more than two decades.
It is a privilege to work with families and individuals, and I welcome the opportunity to meet you.

My colleague Gabriella Russo, MSc, R.Psych., offers autism assessments and adult assessments beyond early adulthood, and leads OCD treatment at Discovery.
